LAGOS FASHION WEEK DAY 2- GËTO

Date:

Gëto brings the love for home- Lagos their Spring Summer 2024 collection. Samantha Obidia the Creative Director describes the collection as being dear to her heart because it’s her love for home. Gëto brings streetwear elements mixed with high fashion aesthetics which was reflected in this collection.

For SS’24 Samantha used a triple meaning of home. Firstly the love of Lagos where she was raised, secondly being a woman and thirdly, the love for being physically at home which she depicted with her use of pillows, comfortable trousers, and robes. Speaking to our comfort zones and how fashion is changing since the pandemic, the brand puts comfort above most things and as she grows older, she’s getting more in touch with her feminine aesthetics and silhouettes. For this collection, she added a new technique – hand draping which was done herself, especially with the finale skirt.

For the color theme for the love of home, she drew from cultural and physical references. Culturally she dug into Female artists like Georgia O Keeffe and Frida Kahlo because a lot of their work had to do with flowers, especially Georgia O Keffe because her flowers looked similar to female body parts. With a lot of natural things and a mix of flowers that grow in Nigeria, images of Lagos and Cityscapes using Pantone to highlight the main colors. Some outfits highlight the skies and clouds while others highlight the night light.

For this collection, she didn’t want to choose a current song but a song that makes people feel good and remember home like a family cookout or barbeque. She chose a Jill Scott song living my life like its Golden.

Gëto fits perfectly with this year’s Lagos Fashion Week theme- Standing the test of time because they are a sustainable brand with everything made in Nigeria even with the temptation to produce fabrics outside the country because of the economy. A new addition of fabric- Adire was made to preserve our local culture and craftsmanship used by our ancestors and is very much relevant today.
