This season’s Fashion Week started in Lagos with Banke Kuku SS24 in collaboration with Polo Avenue inviting us to Eden. This collaboration with Polo Avenue brought so much joy to my heart seeing the success it had in time past with Banke Kuku’s Runway debut.
It’s quite understandable why Polo Avenue the ultimate luxury fashion destination in West Africa which carries an extensive collection from some of the world’s most prestigious fashion houses will partner once again with Banke Kuku which is known for creating luxury loungewear that translates to occasional wear. The collaboration also aligns with Polo Avenue’s commitment to promoting and fostering growth in the Nigerian and African Fashion Industry thereby providing intense support to emerging and exceptional fashion brands in Africa through its annual event, the Polo Fashion Series.
Polo Avenue’s Vision is to increase global appeal and demand for excellent craftsmanship in the region and being part of the Polo Luxury Group with over 30 years of industry experience gives the company great leverage to carefully curate a selection of vibrant pieces that ignite fashion satisfaction to keep the region at the forefront of creativity, style and innovation.
Invitations were received and as we arrived at the venue I kept pondering to myself how Banke was going to interpret Eden. This translation started on arrival at the venue, the entrance had a backdrop covered with Banke Kuku and Polo Avenue Logos which led to the corridor with the same backdrop and hanging flowers from the roof this served as a beautiful backdrop for guests to take pictures which transported us to a beautiful Eden garden.
Eden by Banke was a beautiful garden sitting beside the banks of the Atlantic Ocean, guests were ushered to their seats and served finger food, cocktails, and drinks while soaking up the beautiful scenery with the ocean breeze gently cooling the atmosphere with its calmness.
Each side of the runway was decorated with beautiful flowers in various colors and forms while the pillars were covered in new Banke Kuku prints. Adding to Eden were the beautiful guests mostly dressed in Banke Kuku outfits with smiling faces chit-chatting, and networking. The atmosphere felt cool, warm, happy, and joyous setting the tone for the show’s commencement.
We had our host for the show Eku Edewor, beautifully dressed from the Eden collection in a red figure-flattering dress with side knit and thigh-high slit that was light and airy which Banke Kuku is known for. She took us through her journey with Banke, the brand’s growth, and what we were to expect from this collection.
The show started with soft music, a bit of bird whispers and then, the first dress came down the runway in a beautiful flowery print. The collection had so many beautiful additions to it in response to the request of the Kukutribe (Banke Kuku’s Clients) over the years. Banke delivered each print and outfit in a balanced way with nature in its various forms and colors, particularly things accustomed to Nigeria in an effortless manner such that everyone both local and international could relate to easily.
Most of the outfits had flowers such as Boungevillia, Birds and Ladybird prints on them while a new Kuku monogram print and colors were introduced. Aside from the silk and mesh fabric being a house staple, other fabrics were introduced, with some embroidery and beadwork. The signature Banke Kuku pouch bag was beautifully adorned in various sizes with a new shape added to the collection. It was an all-inclusive collection with a lot of layering, and different silhouettes, showing it caters to everyone from all corners of the world, for all occasions and every religion. The Partners for Eden collection by Banke Kuku were Polo Avenue, I Do Events, I Do Weddings, and Nazadi.
The event ended with a closing speech by Banke Kuku and host, Eku Edewor. We helped ourselves to more drinks and cocktails, more pictures were taken. Everyone talked about the new collection and what they’ll be getting for various occasions. It was nice to know that the Banke Kuku brand will be available at all Polo outlets. Leaving the show felt good and a great way to start Fashion Week.

FLUTTERWAVE TRADE FAIR
Over the past two years, Flutterwave in partnership with Pages by Dammy has hosted three astounding trade fairs which were major trade fairs and exhibitions showcasing the high growth and businesses of SMEs that use the Flutterwave for Business and Flutterwave Store. Flutterwave trade fair brings people together and helps them network. This year’s event was no exception as many people came together and shopped from various stores ranging from fashion to beauty, hair, and drinks.
This year’s Flutterwave Trade Fair 4.0 was titled ‘’Battle of the Brands’’ and was motivated by pages by Dammy, Flutterwave’s small growth business partner who thought of doing something differently this year. Dammy said looking into the data, the top-performing merchants are fashion businesses that sell both locally and internationally and make over $100,000 revenue monthly. Flutterwave trade fair being a CSR initiative thought of ways to show love and support for fashion businesses by making them battle it out in the Flutterwave battle of the brands and by supporting ready-to-wear brands on a small scale while aiming to grow bigger.
The theme for this year was ‘’Festival of Colours’’. 10 brands were competing for the grand prize. Each brand had to interpret and express the theme of this year’s event with Flutterwave’s brand colors which come in six primary colors. They are Mustard, Orange, Cream, Green, Pink, and Navy Blue that show creativity, authenticity, time management, quality assurance, and fittings.
The Judges for this event were three fashion experts- Noble Igwe @noble_igwe, Obis obis.ora, Nonye @pweetywings. Each brand was judged based on the creativity of designs, quality control, fittings to models, and Authenticity or originality of styles. The brands didn’t make it easy for the judges with their exceptional designs and gave the audience a nice show with people interacting. Eventually, the Judges picked the top five and narrowed it down to the top three and one winner. The first runner-up won N300,000 while the second runner-up won N200,000. Bod.ng emerged as the winner of the maiden Edition of Flutterwave Battle of the Brands and went home with N1,000,000, an exclusive swag box, and some other merchandise.
Speaking to Bukola the creative director of Bod.ng said Bod has been in business officially since 2020 and has been using Flutterwave since inception. The inspiration for her collection was the right balance between the brief given by Flutterwave and showcasing different looks ranging from corporate wear, casual, bridal, and a playful look that speaks to her brand and customers.
Flutterwave trade fair brings people together and helps them network. This year’s event was no exception as a lot of people came together and shopped from various stores ranging from fashion to beauty, hair, and drinks while having a good time.

Flowers grow everywhere and it’s only natural for some species of flower to grow in certain regions of the world due to their climate and natural habitats. National flowers, also known as floral emblems or state flowers, are specifically chosen to represent a country’s natural beauty, culture, and uniqueness. The selection of a national emblem is influenced by various factors such as the flower’s popularity in the country, the country’s landscape, historical significance, and cultural symbolism.
COSTUS SPECTABILIS- THE GUARDIAN
NIGERIA’S NATIONAL FLOWER
Nigeria is also known as the giant of Africa and the most populous black nation with an estimated population of over 200 million people located in West Africa. Nigeria is home to a lot of plants with over 7,000 plant species out of which over 5,000 are natives.
The national flower of Nigeria is the Yellow Trumpet, scientifically known as Costus spectabilis. This vibrant and beautiful flower is native to West Africa, and it is commonly known for its striking yellow bloom. It represents the uniqueness, prosperity and beauty of the country.
Costus Spectabilis also known as the Yellow Trumpet belongs to the Costaceae family. There are over 100 species belonging to the Costaceae family. They are all tropical and grow in various continents of the world such as Africa, Asia, America, and Australia. It is an herbaceous perennial plant and flowers several weeks before its leaves appear. The plant typically grows up to 2 meters (around 6.5 feet) in height and features spirally arranged leaves and beautiful yellow flowers. This flower blooms from March to October but it has been misrepresented with a red color on the Nigerian coat of arms.
LANDSCAPING WITH COSTUS SPECTABILIS
COSTUS SPECTABILIS- SPIRIT OF THE LANDCOSTUS SPECTABILIS IN A POT
Costus Spectabilis is sometimes harvested in the wild for local use of its edible leaves. It is also cultivated for its aesthetic appeal and it’s sometimes used in gardens for landscaping and as potted plants. Its distinctive yellow flower and curved-like leaves make it a popular choice for adding color and visual interest to tropical and subtropical gardens.
Nigeria’s climate is mostly tropical in the South and central regions with hot and semi-arid climate in the north with variable rainy and dry seasons. Planting Costus Spectabilis just like other tropical plants is easy in Africa. Some conditions for growing a healthy Costus Spectabilis are:-
Soil: a light draining soil is a great option.
Light:- Some species love full sunlight while others love the shade with minimal light and moist soil and tropical climate.
Fertilizer: They are heavy feeders during their growth season and should be fed weekly with weak liquid fertilizer.
Water: They love water and should always be watered regularly to keep the soil moist.
Costus spectabilis is a bright and beautiful flower that should become popular in Nigeria by the government and its people. It can be made popular by talking more about it, using it at various functions, landscaping at strategic places in the country, and conducting more research on its health significance.
The Story Behind Nigeria’s National Plant – The Yellow Trumpet
Please kindly share your idea on how Costus Spectabilis can be more popular in Nigeria.

Kai Collective is a London-based fashion brand founded by Nigerian-born designer Fisayo Longe in 2016. The brand is known for its bold prints, vibrant colors, and innovative designs that celebrates femininity and empowers women of all shapes and sizes.
The success of the brand can be traced to its founder and like most success stories there were various winding paths before the attainment of success. Before the birth of Kai Collective, Longe had her primary education in Nigeria before moving to the UK to finish her secondary school and recently completing her university education.
FISAYO LONGE- THISDAY STYLE
Prior to completing her first degree she locked a place at the university to study law but missed her grades and was fortunate to get a gap year scheme at KPMG. She spent six months working at KPMG and traveled around Asia where she got inspired to start a fashion and travel blog. Longe accepted a full-time role as an apprentice accountant at KPMG on her return where she spent two years while attending university in the summer.
She fell more in love with fashion as she grew her blog- Mirror Me and took a short-term contract at Liberty, a London-based fashion brand. In fashion, she found out she loved fabrics and was collecting them on her various travels. Longe noticed during a short course at the London College of Fashion that many clothes under review were manufactured in Turkey. She decided to explore Turkey where she found beautiful fabrics and she also sourced a manufacturer, this brought about the birth of Kai Collective.
At that time Longe was a fashion influencer with over fifty thousand followers and thought sales were going to be easy but, it was not. It took some years of persistence, consistency, introducing new products, sharing her journey, and marketing before Kai collective had its first major break in 2019.
Surprisingly in that year, Kai collective didn’t spend any money on publicity or marketing but, they received a huge amount of press coverage and acceptance in the fashion world with a lot of influencers wearing their collection.
The next year 2020, proved to be better than the preceding year for Kai Collective with the creation of the ‘’Gaia Dress’’ in alluring prints. The Gaia dress was launched in January but production was paused due to the pandemic because most of her manufacturing was done in Asia. In April 2020, with the world opening up from the pandemic as in most of Asia, the first batch was manufactured and everything was sold out instantly.
